In a disturbing string of events, eight idols have been vandalized in attacks on several Hindu temples in Bangladesh.

Eight idols at three Hindu temples in Mymensingh and Dinajpur, Bangladesh, have been vandalized in recent events spanning a two-day period, according to a media report released on Friday.

One individual has been taken into custody by police in relation to destruction at one of the temples, according to PTI, which cited The Daily Star newspaper.

These are the most recent in a string of assaults against Bangladesh’s Hindu minority. Early on Thursday and Friday, three idols from two temples in the Haluaghat sub-district of Mymensingh were damaged.

The report also cited residents and temple sources. According to Abul Khayer, officer-in-charge (OC) of the Haluaghat Police Station, early on Friday morning, criminals looted two idols at Bonderpara Temple in the Shakuai union of Haluaghat.

Furthermore, he said, no arrests have been made and no case has been filed.

“We have arrested one person, Azharul (37), for vandalizing Hindu idols in the Shakuai area,” said Abul Khayer, Officer in Charge (OC) of Haluaghat Police Station under Northern Mymensigh district, according to ANI. Today, we will bring him before the court. At a temple in the Shakuai region, miscreants destroyed and vandalized two idols that were still under construction on Thursday night.

In a another instance, early on Thursday, robbers damaged an idol at the Polashkanda Kali Temple in the Beeldora union of Haluaghat.

A 27-year-old male from the Polashkanda hamlet was taken into custody by police on Friday for his suspected participation. According to the OC, Alal Uddin confessed to the crime during questioning.

“He was brought before a court in Mymensingh this afternoon, and he was sentenced to jail,” he said.
